How did California Mennonites confront the challenges and promises of modernity?Books about Mennonites have centered primarily on the East Coast and the Midwest, where the majority of Mennonite communities in the United States are located. But these narratives neglect the unique history of the multitude of Mennonites living on the West Coast. In California Mennonites, Brian Froese relies on archival church records to examine the Mennonite experience in the Golden State, from the nineteenth-century migrants who came in search of sunshine and fertile soil to the traditionally agrarian community that struggled with issues of urbanization, race, gender, education, and labor in the twentieth century to the evangelically oriented, partially assimilated Mennonites of today.Froese places Mennonite experiences against a backdrop of major historical events, including World War II and Vietnam, and social issues, from labor disputes to the evolution of mental health care. California Mennonites include people who embrace a range of ideologies: many are historically rooted in the sixteenth-century Reformation ideals of the early Anabaptists (pacifism, congregationalism, discipleship); some embrace twentieth-century American evangelicalism (missions, Billy Graham); and others are committed to a type of social justice that involves forging practical ties to secular government programs while maintaining a quiet connection to religion. Through their experiences of religious diversity, changing demographics, and war, California Mennonites have wrestled with complicated questions of what it means to be American, Mennonite, and modern. This book—the first of its kind—will appeal to historians and religious studies scholars alike.

Die Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen ist vor allem für ihren Bestand an Niederländischer Kunst des 17. Jahrhunderts bekannt. Dass sie darüber hinaus auch eine Kollektion von Gemälden des 19. Jahrhunderts umfasst, die einige wirkliche Schätze enthält, gleicht einer Neuentdeckung. Diese Kollektion wird hier erstmals in einem eigenen Bestandskatalog vorgestellt. Obwohl es sich um eine eher kleine Sammlung handelt, erweist sich diese doch als erstaunlich repräsentativ, um das Kunstverständnis des 19. Jahrhunderts mit seinen wechselnden Prämissen sowie kunsttheoretischen und künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen an konkreten Kunstwerken aufzuzeigen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei die Gattungstheorie: Die seit der Frühen Neuzeit vertretene Ausdifferenzierung der Malerei in profane und religiöse Historie, Genre, Landschaft, Stillleben, Tierstück und Porträt wurde über das gesamte 19. Jahrhundert hinweg kontrovers diskutiert, blieb aber als wertsetzendes System lange präsent. Der vorliegende, von Dozenten und Studierenden des Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Universität Göttingen gemeinsam erarbeitete Bestandskatalog nutzt die Gattungstheorie als "roten Faden", um eine historische Perspektive auf den Bestand der Gemälde des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Göttinger Universitätskunstsammlung anzubieten.

Parmi les principes théologiques protestants fondateurs, l'affirmation que la foi seule assure le salut du croyant s'exprime souvent. N'étant plus méritoires, les œuvres n'en sont pas pour autant interdites : l'action envers les plus démunis, au profit des corps souffrants, s'observe là où la réformation s'implante. Et l'encouragement à diverses entreprises d'entraide communautaire demeure réel. Les œuvres ne sont plus garantes du salut, comme dans le catholicisme, mais un prolongement de la foi, de l'application de l'amour du prochain et de la reconnaissance envers Dieu. Les œuvres protestantes en Europe examine cette notion d'œuvres du XVIe au début du XXe siècle : les institutions qui les encadrent, les organisent ; les figures et les structures qui se singularisent dans le domaine de l'assistance. Cette réflexion s'appuie d'abord sur les écrits qui appellent à prendre soin de son prochain : textes théologiques, cours de formation pastorale, sermons stimulent, chacun à sa manière, l'action charitable. Passer du texte aux actes s'impose alors pour comprendre l'importance, dans la vie quotidienne des fidèles, d'une pratique devenue impératif chrétien et facteur de cohésion communautaire. Dès lors, l'approche du secours matériel et spirituel nécessite de détailler les structures qui, sur quatre siècles, traduisent l'influence d'une conscience accrue de la dimension sociale de l'Évangile.
